Setting Sail For Stranger Tides

Among the world's hottest properties at the moment is surely Pirates of the Caribbean. The hype machine has a lot of gas in it at the moment, and projects are appearing beyond the fourth movie itself 'On Stranger Tides'. Critics weren't especially happy with Gore Verbinski's later two Pirates films, though plenty of people went to see them (before grumbling a bit about them afterwards). But critical reception rarely counts for anything anyway, and despite a somewhat limp wristed showing, there's definite public sympathy for the franchise's continuation.

There's something instantly accessible about the Pirates franchise that has made it such a success. Possibly, it's the fact that we too can sail 'neath the Tropical Sky of Barbados Holidays: you can't fly an X-Wing in real life. There are few franchises that have made it to four blockbuster film releases, fewer of genuine value (hello Police Academy). Compare Pirates' success with the Matrix franchise, which had a part two and three that were similarly filmed and unpopular. Matrix 3 hinted that there needed to be a Matrix 4, a key difference between the two franchises. Pirates 4 was neither hinted at nor required by the ending of Pirates 3.

The end of the third film also more or less removed Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley from the picture, and they accordingly do not return. On Stranger Tides is the start of a new spin on our 17th Century Holidays to St Lucia. This time, things will focus even closer on the Jack Sparrow character, not having the 'relateable' (and a lot less fun) love story to anchor it down. Johnny Depp's character is unmistakeably the main event in these movies. Hopefully the script won't simply pander to people's Sparrow lust, and will add something to the character.

How then, do movie makers know when their new product has made it big these days? Well, 2.68 Billion Dollars in Worldwide takings are a start. And if you can claim to have increased the volume of Jamaica Holidays, you may be able to discern some measure of success. But the absolutely crystal clear proof of success is when you can shift a game with Lego-based version of your characters, as Pirates will do with the upcoming 'Lego Pirates of the Caribbean'.

Cool! Um...if you're good at art, I guess you could do a nice sketch of each of them. One of my friends did this, and she said they loved it. If you're not that good at art, though...why not try making a scrapbook or something? Dedicate a page to each member, and then have one of all of them.

Haha, I just asked that question when I THOUGHT I'd be going...apparently you can wait in a line for them to sign stuff after the show. I'd assume you could also find them walking around, but that would probably be difficult since Warped Tour is big, and they might be on their tourbus or in their dressing room etc.
